Personal item size on budget airlines is 18x14x8 so this one is 0.5" too tall and 3" too thick

You're off? It's only 0.5 inches too tall. The other dimension is alright

This checks off some boxes for me. I want a nice looking bag that has a strap to hold large beverage containers. But.... The pictures in The ad look very different from the ones in the user reviews. The ones in the ad make the material look thick and nice, the material in the user review make it look like a school backpack.

I'm going to order one and give it a shot and see what it looks like.

Temping... I need a bag that will survive a 18 day Japan trip. It will mainly be bag to bring stuff for a few day trips. Not really a walking around backpack.

Has anyone ever actually been denied a personal item due to being slightly too big? I have never had anyone question it

Depends on the day your TSA representative has been having. 😂

Yes. A gate attendant at AA tried to make me check a cabin bag I've used for years as my personal item. Briggs & Riley and always fits under the seat. She made me put it in the sizer, and when the front pocket was bulging a bit, she made me rearrange until it got in. It slid under the seat with zero issues.

TSA measures bag sizes for airlines now?

This is the perfect travel bag. I used it as a carry on with some vacuum bags for my clothes. I spent two weeks in Thailand with multiple domestic flights and even used it as a day pack for some days.
My only gripe is the USB port does not support fast charging so it wasn't used.

I've had it happen once each with Frontier and Spirit, but no surprise there. I've thrown out stuff to avoid checking the bag. Weights never been an issue luckily, since my personal and checked bags are usually where I keep heavier items.

Frontier is 18x14x8 for personal item.
https://faq.flyfrontier.com/help/...s-for-bags

The 0.3-0.5" too tall, it might get by with some squeezing.

The 11" deep vs 8" allowed is more questionable. This bag has no compression straps to help squeeze it down. And it looks more on the structured keep-shape side (maybe, never touched it in person). It will probably have to be squished to fit the sizer.

Also, it's not TSA that enforces the personal item bag sizes, it would be the budget airline (like Frontier) boarding attendants. They have a box and if they are feeling frisky, they can deny if it doesn't slip cleanly and easy into the sizing box. Like maybe you could squish it a bit and make it fit, it's up to them if they'll allow it and apparently they get bonus money if they deny and force you pay to check the bag.

Slightly too big, no. Clearly too big, yes. Coming back from Denver Frontier airlines nailed me for my "personal item" at the gate. I've flown quite a bit with that ebags Mother Lode and have only had a problem with it that one time. I've had a tripod sticking out of it and no issues. Probably over the weight limit for a personal item too. It doesn't fit all the way under the seat with the cheap crap airlines so I just rest my feet on it.

3" too thick is nuts lol. It's easy to squish a bag down 1/2 an inch on the top. It's nearly impossible to compress the middle of your pack a whole 3".
